STEPS to a Healthier Community

Salinas, California may be known as “America’s Salad Bowl” for its vast production of vegetables but ironically Salinas residents consume little of what they grow. As a result, more than 70 percent of residents are overweight or obese. These realities prompted the Monterey County Health Department to employ an ambitious community-wide communications campaign to mobilize every sector of their community to embrace change. The partnerships, policies and promotions that resulted from this 18-month campaign have fundamentally changed the look of Salinas, contributing to unprecedented improvements in health behaviors and marked decreases in obesity and diabetes rates. For this exemplary, innovative and impactful public relations work, Brown•Miller Communications was on two occasions awarded the nation’s highest honor of public relations, the Public Relations Society of America’s Silver Anvil, in the areas of community relations and multicultural communications campaign.
